ADA & Aging-in-Place Bathroom Remodeling
An aging-in-place bathroom lets you stay in the home you love, safely and independently, for as long as possible. Our accessible remodeling service adapts bathrooms for mobility changes today — or builds in the reinforcements now so features can be added in an afternoon later. Every design decision starts with the person using the room: their mobility, their routines, and their dignity.
Curbless Showers and Safer Entry
The highest-value change is eliminating the step into the shower. A curbless or low-threshold walk-in shower (see our shower conversion service) removes the trip edge entirely and can be built wide enough for a shower chair or assisted bathing. We engineer the floor slope so water drains correctly without a curb, install slip-resistant tile, and place controls where they can be reached from outside the spray — no first blast of cold water, no stretching across the shower to adjust temperature.
Grab Bars, Blocking and Fixtures
Grab bars only work when they are anchored into solid blocking, so we open walls where needed and install wood blocking at the shower, tub and toilet before closing up — even in projects where bars are not installed yet, we document the blocking locations for the future. Comfort-height toilets reduce the effort of sitting and standing; lever-handle faucets work for arthritic hands; handheld shower wands on slide bars serve seated and standing users alike. Anti-scald pressure-balancing valves protect sensitive skin from temperature spikes.
Layout, Lighting and Clearances
Where the room allows, we widen clear floor space for walker or wheelchair turning, recommend door swing or pocket-door changes, and raise lighting levels with layered, glare-free fixtures plus night lighting along the path from the bedroom. Slip-resistant flooring with a matte finish replaces polished tile that turns slick when wet. Small details — contrasting tile edges that make steps and thresholds visible, rounded counter corners — add up to a room that feels designed, not clinical.
Built for Now and Later
Many clients are remodeling a bathroom for a parent moving in, recovering from surgery, or simply planning ahead while a renovation is already scheduled. Because the accessible features are integrated into a normal, attractive remodel, the room never looks institutional — it just works better for everybody, including grandkids and guests. As part of a full bathroom remodel, most accessibility upgrades add little cost compared with retrofitting them later.
Planning With Family and Caregivers
These projects often involve more voices than a typical remodel — the homeowner, adult children, sometimes an occupational therapist or discharge planner. We welcome that input at the consultation, where measurements like transfer space beside the toilet, reach ranges for controls, and doorway widths can be matched to the actual equipment being used, from a specific wheelchair to a particular shower chair. If state or local assistance programs, veterans benefits or long-term-care insurance may help with costs, we can document the scope in the itemized form those programs usually require, so your paperwork is ready when you file.
